Dental Implants are, essentially an artificial replacement tooth. Implants are a two-part solution that attaches directly to your jawbone, not an existing or neighbouring tooth like a bridge The implant itself is a titanium metal cylinder that mimics the tooth’s natural root. Once that is placed, a crown is connected to it to.
The process for a dental implant takes a few months. Initially, we have to ensure that you are a candidate for the implant. This means that the bone in the site of the implant has to be of a certain quality. This is determined by taking a special x-ray called a tomogram. Should the site be appropriate, the titanium cylinder is placed. The cylinder has to integrate within the jaw bone. This can take anywhere from 4-6 months. Once that is complete, the crown is then placed.
Should the site not be appropriate then a bone graft will be required prior to placing the titanium cylinder. Once that is complete, then the process can start. There are times when an implant cannot be done, if so other options would be discussed.

Does getting a dental implant hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, so most patients feel little to no pain during placement. Some soreness and swelling in the days following is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
