Invisalign & Your Bite
Invisalign can help address mild to moderate bite misalignments like:
The clear aligners work by exerting controlled force on specific teeth at different stages of the treatment plan, gradually moving them into the desired position. For severe bite alignments, we might recommend surgery or other orthodontic strategies before we start the Invisalign process.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth using a series of customized clear aligners that gently shift your teeth over time. Teeth can move approximately 0.3mm with each aligner.
Because the aligners are made of clear materials, Invisalign can be a more discreet treatment option when compared to other orthodontic techniques like metal braces.
However, Invisalign may not address advanced alignment issues for the teeth and jaw. We might recommend a different treatment strategy to support your needs in these cases.
Why Aligned Teeth Matter
Straight teeth aren’t just lovely to look at.
If you have misaligned teeth, also known as malocclusion, you may find it more difficult to properly care for and clean your teeth. Because of this, malocclusion can increase the risk of:
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Chipped teeth and fracture
- Tooth sensitivity
- Tooth loss
- Loose fillings or crowns
In some cases, severe malocclusion could make it more challenging to eat, drink, and possibly even breathe properly.
The Invisalign Process
What can you expect from your Invisalign journey?
Our goal is always to help you achieve a smile you cherish and a stable bite long term, so we work 1-on-1 with you throughout the process and make adjustments when necessary.
The time you undergo Invisalign treatment ultimately depends on the issues you wish to address and your adherence to your treatment plan. For Invisalign to be effective, you must wear your aligners between 20–22 hours a day; you may only remove them for cleanings and you’re eating.
You will also need to change your aligners every 1–2 weeks and visit us for a progress evaluation every 4–6 weeks.
1. Consultation
Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. Our team will evaluate your oral health and discuss your goals to determine whether Invisalign is the right solution.
Digital photographs of your teeth are taken to explain all of the areas that require treatment. We then use an iTero Element scanner to map your teeth in 3D detail. This lets us build your custom treatment plan accurately and even allows you to visualize your future smile.
2. Building Your Plan
Upon deciding on Invisalign, we will design a personalized treatment plan outlining the steps and timeline for your orthodontic journey. Many times this may be in combination with future fillings, crowns or veneers. Regardless, the entire plan will be outlined.
3. Fitting Your Aligners
You’ll receive a series of custom-made, clear aligners.
These aligners gradually shift your teeth into the desired position. We will provide you with about 3 or 4 aligners at a time before having you visit us again for a progress evaluation.
4. Progress Evaluations
Regular checkups allow us to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the treatment is on track.
After the evaluation, we’ll provide you with additional aligners to wear for the next few weeks.
5. Making Your Retainers
Retainers can help you maintain the results you achieve after your Invisalign treatment.
Customized night time retainers will be provided as a part of your treatment plan to wear while sleeping. These night time retainers are essential for maintaining the position of your teeth and bite. In some cases, we may place a discreet wire on the inside of your upper and lower front teeth for additional support.

Smile Bio 1
This is an example of a reverse curve smile. This means that the front teeth are positioned at a higher level than the back teeth. With Invisalign, we levelled the teeth to make the smile more prominent. The smile is now beautifully framed by the lips.
Smile Bio 2
This is an example where the lower front teeth have erupted beyond the level of the lower back teeth. In addition, the side teeth on the upper arch are angled inwards. With Invisalign, we were able to level the lower arch and widen the smile to bring it back to a more natural position.
Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on the issues we’re attempting to resolve and how long the treatment might take.
Many insurance companies accept Invisalign as part of their orthodontic coverage, but we can also offer interest-free and third-party payment plans to help make the treatment more accessible.
You may also choose to use your health spending or health trust accounts to contribute to the cost of Invisalign treatments.
I’m wearing braces. Can I wear Invisalign aligners instead?
In some cases, we can use a combination of braces and Invisalign aligners. However, you must consult our team to see if this approach is right for you.
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
Invisalign aligners are made of SmartTrack material, an exclusive multilayer polyurethane plastic designed explicitly for the Invisalign treatment system.
This material is free of BPA, BPS, latex, and gluten.
How long will my treatment last?
The length of your treatment will depend on the issues we’re trying to resolve, compliance in wearing the aligners, attendance to the progress appointments, and your adherence to the treatment plan.
Some patients can complete their Invisalign treatment in 6 months, while others may take up to 12 or 18 months. This could be based on case severity or sometimes teeth take longer to move on an individual basis.
How do I care for my Invisalign aligners?
To care for your Invisalign aligners, follow these tips:
- Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything except water.
- Rinse your aligners with lukewarm water every time you remove them.
- Brush your aligners gently with a soft toothbrush to remove any debris.
- Use Invisalign cleaning crystals or cleaning tablets to clean your aligners.
- Avoid using toothpaste, as it may be too abrasive and can scratch the aligners.
- Always store your aligners in the provided case when not in use.
- Avoid exposing your aligners to excessive heat or cold, as it can distort their shape.
- Keep up with your regular oral hygiene routine by brushing and flossing your teeth before reinserting the aligners.
If you lose or break your aligners, please contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll work with you to get your treatment back on track.
