Patient Overview
A patient visited Cooper Dental looking to improve the appearance of their smile, which had been affected by several long-standing concerns. The patient presented with multiple tooth shades, aging dental fillings that were beginning to deteriorate, crowded teeth, and bite problems that compromised both function and aesthetics.
Because the majority of the teeth required treatment, a comprehensive approach was recommended. Rather than attempting to complete everything at once, treatment was carefully planned in phases over several years. This approach allowed the patient to establish a healthy foundation first before gradually rebuilding a natural, balanced smile.
Key Outcomes
- Bite corrected using Invisalign over a two-year treatment period
- Crowded teeth aligned to create a healthier, more functional bite
- First six upper front teeth restored for aesthetic improvement
- Smile enhancement planned in manageable treatment phases
- Long-term treatment plan designed to improve function, aesthetics, and durability
The Initial Assessment
The patient’s smile presented several challenges that would require comprehensive planning to achieve a predictable long-term result. Clinical examination revealed:
- Multiple tooth shades creating an inconsistent appearance
- Older restorations beginning to degrade
- Crowded teeth affecting alignment
- Bite issues impacting long-term function
- Most visible upper teeth requiring eventual restoration
While the patient was primarily interested in improving the appearance of their smile, the examination showed that addressing the cosmetic concerns without first correcting the bite would compromise the longevity of any restorative work.
For this reason, treatment began by establishing a stable and healthy foundation before moving into the aesthetic phases.
Treatment Phase 1: Bite Correction with Invisalign
The first stage of treatment focused on correcting the patient’s bite and aligning the teeth using Invisalign clear aligner therapy.
Because this was a more complex orthodontic case, treatment took approximately two years. Throughout this process, the teeth were gradually repositioned to create a healthier bite, improve alignment, and establish the ideal foundation for future restorative treatment.
Although Invisalign is often associated with cosmetic straightening, its role in this case was much broader. Correcting the bite first allows future restorations to function more predictably and supports their long-term success.

Treatment Phase 2: Beginning the Smile Transformation
Once the bite had been corrected, attention turned to restoring the visible portion of the patient’s smile.
When designing a smile, treatment focuses on the teeth that are visible from one side of the smile to the other during a full smile. In this patient’s case, ten upper teeth are visible when smiling.
To make treatment more manageable, restoration began with the front six upper teeth. These teeth have the greatest influence on the appearance of a smile and provide the most immediate aesthetic improvement for the patient.
Restoring the central portion of the smile first delivered the transformation the patient had hoped for while allowing future treatment to be completed in carefully planned stages.
After Crowns

Future Treatment Phases
The remaining phases will continue to build on the initial results by restoring the teeth toward the back of the smile on both sides.
This helps carry the colour, shape, and fullness of the smile into the cheek corridors, creating a more balanced and natural appearance while eliminating the darker spaces visible when smiling.
After the aesthetic zone has been completed, treatment will continue with the remaining back teeth, restoring one corner at a time until the entire dentition has been rehabilitated.
Why a Phased Approach Matters
Comprehensive smile rehabilitation is a significant investment in both oral health and appearance. Completing treatment in carefully planned stages allows patients to spread treatment over time while maintaining a clear long-term plan.
By restoring the smile one section at a time, patients are able to better manage both their schedule and financial commitment without compromising the quality or consistency of the final result.
Depending on the complexity of the case, comprehensive treatment may take up to four years from the initial bite correction through to the completion of the final restorations.
The Final Result
This case illustrates how successful smile transformations often begin long before the cosmetic work starts.
By first correcting the bite with Invisalign and then restoring the smile in carefully planned phases, the patient is achieving a result that is not only more attractive but also healthier and designed to last.
Rather than focusing solely on the visible teeth, this comprehensive approach creates a stable foundation that supports each stage of treatment and allows the final smile to develop naturally over time.
